VOLUNTEER

Could you be a volunteer?  See options below

Please see our Trustees and Vacancies section for details about becoming a Trustee. As of March 2026 we are actively recruiting.

Volunteering opportunities are open to men as well as women.

Volunteer call takers:

Every year, we respond to around 2,000 calls, most from victims and survivors of domestic abuse. For many, this is the first time they’ve reached out for help. We also support concerned friends and family members, individuals worried about their own behaviour, and professionals seeking guidance for those they support.

As a volunteer call taker and/or email responder you can make a real difference. While we are not a counselling service, compassionate, empathetic listening is at the heart of what we do. You’ll be fully supported with specialist training and a comprehensive service directory, giving you the confidence to respond to a wide range of situations.

This is not a call centre role. You can take calls from home or elsewhere provided confidentiality is maintained. This flexibility allows you to fit volunteering around your existing commitments.

We ask for a commitment of 2–3 hours per week on the helpline, completion of online learning modules, and attendance at two full days of initial training. You’ll also join support meetings every eight weeks (online or in person), offering ongoing training, updates on services, and a chance to connect with others, share experiences, and reflect on challenging calls. An annual review helps support your development in the role.

By volunteering, you’ll be part of a dedicated team helping people take their first step towards safety and support.

Please note we are hoping to introduce a live web chat service in Spring 2026 and will be looking for volunteers for this role too.

Businesses and employers:

We warmly invite your business to join us in making a real difference in the fight against domestic abuse.

2.Become Volunteer Call Takers: Join our helpline team to provide compassionate support to those in need. This role involves some online training and two face-to-face training days and is for those who would like to contribute to 2 hours per week within their own time, and in the comfort of their own homes.

Ambassadors:

Becoming an Ambassador for the Herts Domestic Abuse Helpline is a meaningful opportunity to use your voice and platform to support victims and survivors across our community. We are looking for individuals and businesses who are passionate about raising awareness and committed to creating safe, supportive spaces. As an Ambassador, you’ll share regular, impactful content highlighting important topics such as recovery, families, or engaging men and boys, alongside helping promote our helpline and how people can access support.
